Shopify and Stripe integration
Payments in Shopify run through Shopify Payments, which in practice means Stripe's infrastructure: cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and the rest. Shopify Payments removes the need for an outside gateway and comes with competitive rates. For a store selling internationally it is the least complicated way to take money.
Why companies connect Shopify to Stripe
An external gateway in Shopify means an extra transaction fee, 0.5 to 2%, charged by Shopify on top of the gateway's own. Running it separately also makes reconciliation and refunds harder than they need to be.
How we do it
Shopify Payments is built on Stripe and carries no external-gateway surcharge. Transactions, refunds and payouts are handled from the Shopify admin, without a separate Stripe account to reconcile.
What you get
No additional Shopify transaction fee when payments run through Shopify Payments
Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, with express checkout lifting conversion by 10-15%
Fraud detection by Stripe Radar, wired into Shopify's own scoring
Payouts to your bank account with foreign currency converted automatically
One place for transactions, refunds and chargebacks, inside the Shopify admin
Use cases
A D2C brand on Shopify selling worldwide and taking payment in several currencies
A fashion label using Shop Pay express checkout for returning customers
A digital-products store handling subscriptions and recurring payments through Stripe
A low-margin dropshipping store where the payment fee is a line worth optimising
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Payments available in my country?
Shopify Payments is available across most of the EU, the UK and North America. It is activated from the Shopify admin and pays out to a local bank account. Where it is not offered, an external gateway works but carries Shopify's additional fee.
What does Shopify Payments cost?
Rates depend on the Shopify plan: roughly 1.9% plus a fixed amount per transaction on Basic, 1.7% on Shopify and 1.5% on Advanced, for European cards. There is no additional Shopify transaction fee on top.
Can I use Stripe directly instead of Shopify Payments?
It is rarely worth it. Shopify charges an extra 0.5-2% for using an external gateway, and Shopify Payments runs on Stripe's infrastructure anyway, so you get the same capability without the surcharge.
