What Jira is
Atlassian's Jira is the most widely used tool for running software projects: Scrum sprints, Kanban boards, backlog and agile reporting. In software houses and corporate IT departments it is the default. It comes as Jira Cloud and, for large organisations, as Data Center.
Five limits of Jira
Not faults, boundaries - these are the places where clients most often run into the edge of the product.
Configuration is overwhelming
Jira offers hundreds of configuration options - workflow schemes, issue types, screens, custom fields, permissions. Setting a project up from scratch needs an experienced administrator and takes days.
Slow on large projects
On projects past 50,000 issues with complex JQL filters, boards and search take three to ten seconds. Jira Cloud is not optimised for data at that size.
Expensive for larger teams
Jira Cloud Premium is roughly €16 per user per month. A team of 50 is about €9,800 a year, and the Enterprise plan with the advanced functions costs more again.
No resource or budget management
Jira has no native resource allocation, project budget tracking or cost control. Each of those means another Marketplace plugin - Tempo, BigPicture - with its own licence.
No documentation or wiki
Jira has no documentation module. That means Confluence, which is another licence, and information then splits across two systems with two permission models.

Can we move the data out of Jira?
Yes. The Jira Cloud API exports projects, issues, sprints, comments and attachments. The awkward part is preserving status-change history and the links between issues. Migration takes two to four weeks.
Will a custom system handle Scrum and Kanban?
Yes. Scrum, Kanban and Scrumban are ways of organising work, not features unique to Jira. A custom tool can implement the same ceremonies, boards and metrics.
